Christina’s world by Andrew Wyeth (1948)

Tempera on Plaster, 82 x 121 cm

Museum of Modern Art, New York

This painting is definitely one of the most famous American paintings of the 20th century. It captures Christina Olson, a girl suffering from palsy who was a neighbor of the author in Maine. In the painting, she is slowly struggling to get to the house in the distance through the field. Wyeth made a comment about this piece and explained that he wanted to capture her extraordinary fight for life, which many people would regard as hopeless.

This painting is extremely detailed - every single hair and single blade of grass is painted separately. Wyeth struggled to capture the whole field for several months, and this struggle is believed to be the reflection of the effort the protagonist of the whole happening on the field is making.
